Bell Mountain-360 Views you Don’t Want to Miss

best hikes in georgia

Bell Mountain has some of the most breathtaking views you’ll find in North Ga. The fact that there’s no hiking required is just a bonus. You will have to brave the windy, steep drive up the mountain to see the views, but I’d definitely say it’s worth it.

Getting to Bell Mountain

Bell Mountain is located in Hiwassee, about 30 minutes above Helen.  The drive there can be a little curvy, depending on which route you take. You’ll eventually turn next to a gas station and follow that road for a little over 2 miles before you reach the top. The first half isn’t bad, but the last mile is steep, windy and only big enough for one car. Take your time and be prepared to pull over when you meet another car.

Parking

There are two parking areas. The first one is larger and will require you to walk about 100 feet up a steep incline. The other one is just steps from the view, but you will have to brave the steep drive. Before you begin there’s a sign telling you to drive at your own risk.

Once at the top take in the breathtaking views from the platform. Enjoy views of the North GA mountains, Hiawassee, and Lake Chatuge. You also have the option of climbing the 115 steps to the top to take in the 360 view of the area, which I definitely recommend doing.

When to Visit Bell Mountain

In the winter months it’s not uncommon for the last ¾ of a mile to be closed. In this case there are still a few areas people park but there’s not room for more than ten cars. Turning around if the spots are full can be pretty scary. Before you get to the one lane road, there will be two areas telling you if the road is closed for winter weather.

If you do decide to continue on and park before the road closes, it’ll be a ¾ mile walk to the top. You’ll just follow the road on foot to the top, but keep in mind since the road is very steep it’s not going to be an easy walk.

Road Closed

If you’re in the mood for a longer hike, checkout Yonah Mountain in Cleveland. Its around 4.5 miles round trip and offers stunning views of the North GA mountains.
