Bell Mountain Lookout: The Best 360 Views in Georgia
Bell Mountain offers some of the most breathtaking views in North Georgia — and the best part? No hiking is required. The drive up is steep and windy, but once you reach the top, the 360° views make every twist and turn worth it! Keep reading for everything you need to know before you go.
Getting to Bell Mountain
Bell Mountain is located in Hiwassee, about 30 minutes above Helen. The drive can be a little curvy, depending on the route you take. You’ll turn by a gas station and follow the road for just over 2 miles to reach the top. The first half of the drive is pretty easy, but the last mile is steep, windy, and only wide enough for one car. Take your time and be ready to pull over if you meet another vehicle.

Parking
There are two parking areas at Bell Mountain. The first is larger, but you’ll need to walk about 100 feet up a steep incline to reach the viewpoint. The second is right next to the view, but you’ll have to tackle the steeper part of the drive to get there. A sign at the start warns drivers to proceed at their own risk, so take your time and drive carefully.
Once you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking views from the platform. You can see the North Georgia mountains, Hiawassee, and Lake Chatuge. For the full 360° experience, I highly recommend climbing the 115 steps to the very top — it’s worth it for the stunning panoramic views.

The View From Bell Mountain
Once you get to the top, take a minute to soak in the views from the platform. You can see the North Georgia mountains all around, the town of Hiawassee below, and Lake Chatuge sparkling in the distance. On a clear day, it feels like you can see forever. I definitely recommend climbing the 115 steps to the very top — the full 360° view is amazing and totally worth it for photos or just taking it all in.

Best Time to Visit Bell Mountain
For the easiest visit and the best views, I recommend going in late spring through early fall. The weather is more predictable, the road is fully open, and you won’t have to worry about ice or snow. You’ll also have more parking options and can easily take your time enjoying the platform and the 360° views without any winter obstacles.
The winter months can be tricky at Bell Mountain. It’s not uncommon for the last ¾ of a mile to be closed due to snow or ice. If that happens, there are still a few spots to park, but there’s room for maybe 10 cars at most. Turning around if the spots are full can be a little nerve-wracking. Before you reach the one-lane section, you’ll see two areas with signs letting you know if the road is closed for winter weather.
If you do decide to continue and park before the road closure, it’s about a ¾ mile walk to the top. You’ll follow the road on foot, but keep in mind it’s steep, so it’s not exactly an easy stroll.
