Things to know Before Visiting

Entrance Fee: $5. You’ll find the payment booth just before the visitor’s center, so be sure to stop there first to take care of the fee. If you’re planning to head straight to the Tennessee Rock Trail, you can do that too—just remember to use the provided envelope to pay the fee before you start your hike.

Getting There: Black Rock Mountain State Park is located in Mountain City Georgia, about two hours north of Atlanta. The roads heading into the park are pretty narrow and windy so be sure to take your time and drive carefully.

Bear Country: Black Rock Mountain is located in bear country, where black bears are known to roam. When hiking in this area, it’s a good idea to make some noise—chatting with a friend is often enough to alert bears to your presence and reduce the chance of surprising one. If you do encounter a bear, speak calmly and slowly back away. If the bear approaches, try to look as large as possible by waving your arms. Carrying bear spray is also a good precaution in case a bear gets too close. While most bears will avoid humans if they can, being prepared and informed is always wise in bear country.

Tennessee Rock Trail

If you are in the mood for a hike, the Tennessee Rock Trail is a must do! The trailhead is located before the visitor’s center, on the right side of the road. The trail is a 2.2 mile loop, however if you are short on time you can follow the trail to the left, turning back the way you came to shorten the trail. This trailhead is also the start of the James E. Edmond Trail, so be sure to follow signs for the Tennessee Rock Trail.

If you are doing the loop, I recommend heading right so that you reach the viewpoint towards the end of the loop. The trail is rated moderate but it is pretty steep in some places, making it harder than I originally thought it would be. Before reaching the overview, you’ll reach the summit, marked by a statue(?). Continuing on a bit farther, you’ll climb a flight of stairs then be greeted by sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.

Black Rock Lake Trail

Black Rock Lake is a beautiful spot with a dock, picnic tables, and a loop around the lake. The trail is an easy 0.85-mile walk, perfect for all ages. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a peaceful picnic, try your hand at fishing, or simply soak in the natural beauty, Black Rock Lake is an ideal spot to end you day in the state park.
