The Ultimate Weekend Getaway to Rock Island, Tennessee

Escape the busy city life for a peaceful weekend getaway in Tennessee. Just a 3-hour drive from Atlanta, discover the beauty of Rock Island State Park and Fall Creek Falls State Park. Day one, marvel at Twin Falls in Rock Island. On day two, explore Fall Creek Falls with its stunning waterfalls, lush forests, and a big lake. Hike, picnic, kayak, or simply relax in these tranquil parks. They guarantee a memorable escape for unwinding and recharging.

Start Your Weekend Getaway on Friday

Kickstart your long weekend on Friday, escaping the city early if you can. Make your way to the Nordic Tiny Home, a cozy airbnb just five minutes away from Rock Island State Park. After you get settled, take the short drive over to Twin Falls. Do the short 0.2 mile hike to take in this beautiful waterfall. Once back at the airbnb enjoy a relaxing night by the camp fire, roasting smore’s and hot dogs, and enjoying the peaceful country side. End the night soaking in the bath tub while you read a book or enjoy a glass of wine.

Saturday: Fall Creek Falls State Park

Just 40 minutes away, spend the second day of your weekend getaway in Fall Creek Falls State Park. You can enjoy a wide range of activities, from hiking and biking on the park’s extensive trail system to fishing and boating on its sparkling lakes. There’s no better place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature.

Begin your morning adventure at Fall Creek Falls Overlook, taking the 0.5 mile hike down to the base of the falls. The trail down is rocky and can be slippery at times, but its worth the trip! After immersing yourself in the beauty of the falls, hop back into your car and continue along the loop until you reach Buzzard’s Roost/Milikan Overlook. You can enjoy the views from the viewing platform, but I recommend taking the short hike to a rocky viewing area to really enjoy the view. This is the perfect area to enjoy a snack or have lunch.

Trails in Falls Creek Falls State Park

If you are up for another hike there are plenty to checkout:

  1. Piney Falls Trail: 2-mile trail takes hikers through a lush forest to the picturesque Piney Falls, which cascades 80 feet into a pool below.
  2. Cable Trail: challenging 1.5-mile trail descends 900 feet into the gorge and offers breathtaking views waterfalls and rock formations.
  3. Paw Paw Trail: This 2.5-mile trail winds through a hardwood forest and offers views of the park’s streams and waterfalls.
  4. Cane Creek Falls Trail: 1.5-mile trail leads to the park’s second-largest waterfall, Cane Creek Falls. It offers stunning views of the surrounding gorge.

If you’re a little tired and need a rest, then head to the lake to lay on a blanket, have a picnic, kayak, or hammock.

Sunday: Relax Before Heading Back

Start the final day of your getaway off slow and enjoy a cup of coffee on the porch, maybe with a good book. Before heading back to the city, enjoy brunch in Chattanooga. I recommend Milk & Honey, a cute spot with tasty lattes, cocktails and brunch items. They serve brunch until 3:00pm so no need to rush over.

From here you can hangout in Chattanooga or do another hike (I suggest Julia Falls Overlook) if your not ready to head home yet.
