The Ultimate Weekend Getaway to Rock Island, Tennessee

Escape the busy city life for a peaceful weekend getaway in Tennessee. Just a 3-hour drive from Atlanta, spend the weekend exploring Rock Island State Park and Fall Creek Falls State Park. On day one, take in the beauty of Twin Falls at Rock Island. Then spend day two exploring all the waterfalls at Fall Creek Falls State Park. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, kayaking, or just relaxing, these parks offer the perfect escape to unwind and recharge.

Start Your Weekend Getaway on Friday

To make the most of you weekend getaway, start your long weekend on Friday, escaping the city early if you can.

Where to Stay

There aren’t many hotels near Rock Island or Fall Creek Falls State Park, so you’re likely to be staying in a short-term rental like Airbnb or Vrbo. You could look for accommodations in the middle of the two parks, in Spencer, TN, but we opted to stay closer to Rock Island State Park. From there, it was about a 45-minute drive to Fall Creek Falls State Park the following day.

We stayed in this Nordic Tiny Home, a cozy Airbnb just five minutes away from Rock Island State Park. This Airbnb has a kitchenette, fire pit, large bathtub and they recently added a sauna outside! We loved how peaceful this place felt, and it was a major bonus that Twin Falls was only a five minute drive away.

If a tiny cabin isn’t your vibe, check out these other options below:

Once you’re settled into your accommodation, head over to Twin Falls for a short hike. The trail is just 0.2 miles long but rewards you with stunning waterfall views, the perfect way to kick off your weekend adventure.

Saturday: Fall Creek Falls State Park

Spend the second day of your weekend getaway in Fall Creek Falls State Park. You can enjoy a wide range of activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, boating and swimming. The trails are beautiful, the lakes are peaceful, and it’s the perfect spot to slow down and soak up some nature

Fall Creek Falls Overlook and Trail

Start the day at Fall Creek Falls Overlook, then take the 0.5 mile hike down to the base of the falls. The trail down is rocky and can be slippery at times, but its worth the trip! At 256 feet tall, Fall Creek Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern U.S., and it’s seriously impressive.

Buzzard’s Roost

After spending some time at the base of the falls, make your way back to car and head to Buzzard’s Roost/Milikan Overlook. You can enjoy the views from the viewing platform, but I recommend taking the short hike to a rocky viewing area to really enjoy the view. This is the perfect area to enjoy a snack or have lunch.

Trails in Falls Creek Falls State Park

If you are up for another hike there are plenty to checkout:

  1. Piney Falls Trail: 2-mile trail takes hikers through a lush forest to the picturesque Piney Falls, which cascades 80 feet into a pool below.
  2. Cable Trail: challenging 1.5-mile trail descends 900 feet into the gorge and offers breathtaking views waterfalls and rock formations.
  3. Paw Paw Trail: This 2.5-mile trail winds through a hardwood forest and offers views of the park’s streams and waterfalls.
  4. Cane Creek Falls Trail: 1.5-mile trail leads to the park’s second-largest waterfall, Cane Creek Falls. It offers stunning views of the surrounding gorge.

If you’re feeling a little tired and need a break, head to the lake. It’s the perfect spot to lay on a blanket, have a picnic, go for a kayak ride, or relax in a hammock.

Sunday: Relax Before Heading Back

Start the final day of your getaway slow. Sip a cup of coffee, take your time, and ease into the morning. Before heading back to the city, stop for brunch in Chattanooga. I recommend Milk & Honey. It’s a charming spot with delicious lattes, brunch favorites, and even cocktails. They serve brunch until 3:00 p.m., so there’s no need to rush over.

From here you can hangout in Chattanooga or do another hike (I suggest Julia Falls Overlook) if your not ready to head home yet.
