How to Get to Minnehaha Falls

Minnehaha Falls is located in Lakemont, GA, about two hours from Atlanta. You’ll take I-985 for most of the drive, and then the last 30 minutes or so are driving backroads. The final 0.6 miles are down a well-maintained dirt road.

There’s a small parking area on the left side of the road that fits about four cars. It wasn’t too busy when I visited, but some people had to park a bit farther up along the shoulder.

About the Trail

The trail begins across from the small parking area, just up the stairs. There’s a slight incline at first, but the path levels out pretty quickly. The trail is short but has a few rocks and tree roots along the way, so watch your step. You’ll notice a few side trails that lead down to the river, but they don’t offer any particularly great views.

Stay on the main trail and cross the small makeshift bridge, soon after, you’ll catch a glimpse of the waterfall peeking through the trees. The river is shallow here but be careful if you decide to walk in, those rocks can be pretty slippery!

This waterfall is extra beautiful if it’s rained recently. If you visit during a dry spell, it’ll still be pretty but not quite as stunning as when the water’s really flowing.

Other Things to Do in The Area

Minnehaha Falls is located right by Lake Rabun, making it easy to spend the whole day in the area. You can rent kayaks or paddleboards and get out on the water, or just relax at the public beach area nearby.

If you’re up for more exploring, Tallulah Gorge State Park is only about 25 minutes away and offers several scenic hikes and overlooks.

Panther Falls is another great nearby option, just 20 minutes from Minnehaha. The trail is about 7 miles round trip.. It’s a bit more of a workout, but totally worth it. And you can even swim at the base of the falls, which makes it a perfect cool-down spot on a warm day.
