DeSoto Falls, Alabama: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

DeSoto Falls in Alabama is one of those spots that’ll leave you in awe the moment you see it. What makes it so special is that you can view the waterfall from three different angles — each one offering something unique.

Whether you’re looking for an easy viewpoint, a short hike, or a more challenging trail, there’s an option for every type of explorer. And if you’re up for a little adventure, you can even check out all three! Continue reading for everything you need to know before visiting DeSoto Falls.

Getting to the Trail Head

To reach the trailhead for DeSoto Falls, you’ll drive straight through DeSoto State Park, passing the visitor center on your way in. I definitely recommend making a quick stop there before you head to the falls — they have free maps, helpful park staff, and great info on other nearby trails and state parks in Alabama.

From the visitor center, follow the signs toward DeSoto Falls. It’s about a 5–10 minute drive. The trailhead for both the overlook and the base of the falls is located just before you reach the picnic area. Keep an eye out for a gravel parking lot on the right side of the road — that’s where you’ll park.

From this spot, you’ll have three hiking options:

1. Hike to the base of the falls for an up-close view.
2. Follow the bluff trail for a scenic route along the cliffs.
3. Take the short trail to the overlook for an easy, high-up view of the waterfall.

If you have time, I highly recommend doing both the overlook and the base hikes — they each offer completely different perspectives and make the experience even more memorable.

Hiking to the base of Desoto Falls

The hike to the base of DeSoto Falls is the most challenging of the three trails, but it’s also the most rewarding. Since we wanted to see the waterfall up close, we decided to start here. The trail is about 1.4 miles round trip, and while it’s not long, it does have some steep and rocky sections — so take your time and wear sturdy shoes.

You’ll start on the trail to the right, which quickly descends into the canyon below. The first stretch takes you past large boulders and unique rock formations, giving you a taste of the rugged beauty of this area. After a short distance, you’ll come to a fork in the trail — follow the signs pointing right toward the base of the falls.

If you ever lose sight of the path or aren’t sure which way to go, look for pink trail markers painted on the trees to guide you. As you get closer to the falls, the trail becomes more uneven, and you’ll need to scramble over a few rocks to reach the base. Take it slow and be mindful of your footing, especially if the rocks are damp.

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning, up-close view of DeSoto Falls — the sound of the rushing water and the mist in the air make it totally worth the effort.

Base of Desoto Falls

Once you reach the base of the waterfall, you’ll find a large, flat rock right beside the water — the perfect spot to sit, relax, and enjoy a snack or lunch with an incredible view. You can also continue exploring along the river for a closer look at the falls, but just keep in mind that the path involves climbing over rocks almost the entire way.

When we visited in the winter, we arrived before noon and had the whole area practically to ourselves. By the time we started hiking back up around 1:30–2:00 pm, we noticed a lot more people making their way down. I can only imagine how much busier it gets in the summer, especially since it’s such a popular spot for swimming and cooling off on a hot day.

Once you are ready to head back, just retrace your steps to the top. 

Hiking to Desoto Falls Overlook

If you have time, I definitely recommend hiking to the overlook too — it’s quick, easy, and offers an incredible view from above. The trailhead starts in the same spot as the one to the base, but instead of heading right and downhill, you’ll go straight. The hike is only about 0.45 miles each way and follows the same pink trail markers you used before.

This trail has very little elevation gain, so it’s much easier than the hike to the base. It’s not as rocky, but there are still plenty of tree roots along the path, so keep an eye on your footing. You’ll reach the overlook fairly quickly, where a wide rocky ledge opens up to a beautiful clearing in the trees. From here, you’ll get an amazing view of Desoto Falls and the surrounding canyon.

Just be cautious near the edge — there’s a steep drop-off beyond the rock, and there aren’t any railings. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the peaceful view before heading back.

Same as the base, once you’re finished enjoying the view, just retrace your steps back to the car. 

View of the Falls from the Picnic Area

For a different perspective of DeSoto Falls, head out of the parking lot and make a right toward the picnic area. In the summer, this area is lively with kayak rentals and swimming opportunities in the lake.

A short walk from the parking lot brings you to the dam at the falls. You can get surprisingly close to the water here, so be careful — there’s no railing in this spot. Just a bit further along, you’ll reach a viewing platform with a railing, positioned directly above the waterfall.

Many people don’t realize you can follow the railing to the right side for an even better vantage point. From here, you can see the river below and even spot hikers making their way to the base, giving you a full sense of the scale and beauty of the falls.
