We’ve scouted the trails, tested the waters (literally), and rounded up the 6 best waterfalls in Georgia you absolutely can’t miss. Grab your hiking gear and some snacks, and let’s dive into the awe-inspiring beauty that Georgia’s wilderness has to offer. This is your guide to chasing waterfalls in Georgia – let the adventure begin!

6 Best Waterfalls in Georgia

Amicalola Falls– starting off with one of the most popular hikes in Georgia! Located close to Dawsonville, this trail is one you don’t want to miss! There’s a few ways to see the falls but the most popular one is a 2.1 mile loop. You can expect a LOT of stairs on this hike. However, you can easy see the falls without climbing all the stairs to the top. There is a parking lot at the top of the falls if you just want to look down on the waterfall or see the mountain views from the top.

Helton Creek Falls–  this is my favorite waterfall to swim in Georgia! This trail is a short 0.6 miles round trip so you don’t have to worry about a long hike to the car in your swimsuit. Helton creek falls is located about 30 minutes outside of Helen, Ga.

Trahlyta Falls

Trahlyta Falls– this waterfall is located in Vogel State Park, meaning you will have to pay a $5 entrance fee to access this waterfall. Vogel State Park is also located about 30 minutes from Helen, only 10 minutes away from Helton Creek Falls. So you could see both of them in one day if you wanted. The trail to Trahlyta Falls is pretty easy. It is only 1.5 miles round trip and follows the lake.

Dukes Creek Falls– located only 10 minutes from Helen and is 2 miles round trip. This falls is one of my favorite falls in Georgia! The waterfall is massive and I love how the two platforms let you experience the waterfall from two different angles. Not to mention how close you are to the base of the falls! The trail itself is a steady descend to the falls but the climb back up isn’t too hard.

Toonigh Creek Falls– this falls is a little bit of a hidden gem- especially for those who live close to Atlanta. Located in Woodstock, this trail is only 40 minutes from Atlanta, making it perfect for a day trip.  The trail is around 3.4 miles round trip but can be a little difficult to follow because there are no signs pointing you to the falls. Read this article before visiting so you know how to find the waterfall!

Anna Ruby Falls– located only 10 minutes from Helen, this waterfall is a must visit when in the area! You’ll pass through Unicoi State Park to get to the falls. Once at Anna Ruby Falls area, there is a $5 entrance fee per adult to get in. The hike is only 0.8 miles round trip but is all uphill to the falls.

What to Bring on Day Hikes

Water-depending on how hot it is and how long of a hike, you should bring atleast 1-2 liters of water to stay hydrated. I prefer to carry a hydration bladder, they make it so much easier to stay hydrated on the trails without lugging around a massive water bottle.

Hiking Poles on the way up, it helps distribute your weight, on the way down, they provide stability and reduces the impact on your knees.

Hiking Boots–  If you enjoy hiking regularly, you should definitely invest in hiking boots or trail shoes. A good pair will offer you ankle support, protection from mud and streams and better tread for hiking all terrain. For trails that are mainly flat a good pair of tennis shoes will do but once you move into different trails and increasing elevation, hiking shoes are a must.

Bear Spray– One thing I hope I never need to use, but always have on hand! It’s not necessary on all hikes, but if you’re heading in bear country you should definitely have it easily accessible.

Snacks– depending on how long the hike is, I might just bring a few cliff bars, trail mix or fruit. For longer hikes I like to have something more substantial, such as a sandwich and some beef jerky.

Water shoes– if you plan to swim in any waterfalls I would suggest bringing water shoes to protect your feet! A lot of times there will be rocks or branches in the water and water shoes will make it easy to navigate.
