Getting to Vogel State Park
Vogel State Park is a beautiful park located in Union County, Georgia, at the base of Blood Mountain. It is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Atlanta. The park entrance fee is $10 per car, and they accept both cards and cash.
There are a few different areas to park here. When you first enter the park, there is a large parking lot to the right of the main road. This is a good option if you want to be close to the park office, the visitor center, and the lake. If you continue down the main road, there are a few smaller parking areas along the way. These are a good option if you want to be closer to the hiking trails or the picnic areas.
Trahlyta Falls
Trahlyta Falls is an easy trail you can’t miss in Vogel State Park. Only a 1.5 mile loop, this trail takes you to the gorgeous waterfall and around the lake. You can start from any of the parking lots, though the second one will be closer to the trail. You’ll follow the trail around the lake until you reach the dam on the opposite side of the lake. Here you can take in the beautiful views of the lake with the mountain in the background.

When you’re ready, follow the sign next to the trees through the forest. This path will take you directly to the observation deck to see the falls.
You’ll see some small side trails along the way, if you take these they lead to the base of the falls, behind the observation deck. From here there aren’t any views of the falls because the deck will be blocking the view. When you’re ready to head back, retrace your steps to the dam then continue around the lake. The trail makes a loop and will lead you back to your parking lot.

Make it a Day Trip
Since the hike to Trahlyta Falls is a quick one, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the rest of Vogel State Park or some nearby North Georgia gems. Here are my favorite ways to fill the day:
Fishing & Paddling
The lake is a huge draw for anyone looking to get on the water. It’s calm, scenic, and offers some of the best views of Blood Mountain.
- Fishing: You can find largemouth bass, trout, bluegill, and catfish in the lake. If you’re more into stream fishing, the creek through the park is great, just remember you’ll need a trout stamp. If you forgot bait, the Visitor’s Center has you covered with live worms for sale.
- Paddling: You can’t bring motorized boats here, which keeps it peaceful. You can rent everything at the Visitor’s Center on a first-come, first-served basis:
- Pedal Boats: Perfect for a quick 30-minute or 1-hour cruise (ranging from $12–$28).
- Kayaks, Canoes & Paddleboards: Available for longer stretches, from one hour up to four ($15–$43).

Swimming & Beach Days
During the summer, the sandy swimming beach is the place to be. It’s a great spot for kids to splash around while you enjoy the mountain views. Just a few things to keep in mind:
- Safety: There’s no lifeguard, so stay within the roped-off swimming areas.
- Pets: While Vogel is very dog-friendly on the trails, pups aren’t allowed on the actual beach or in the lake water.
Picnics, Grills, and Mini-Golf
Vogel is a classic spot for a family BBQ. There are about 20 free picnic tables and grills scattered around for public use.
- Picnic Shelters: If you have a big group, you can reserve one of the four shelters (which have water and electricity) for around $35 a day.
- Mini-Golf: For just $5 a person, you can play a round of mini-golf. Grab your clubs and balls at the Visitor’s Center and enjoy a low-stakes game before heading home.
Is Trahlyta Falls Worth the Visit?
So, is Trahlyta Falls worth the trip? Absolutely.
Even though the hike itself is short, the waterfalls is absolutely stunning. Because it’s so easy to reach, it’s the perfect ‘anchor’ for a mountain day trip.
Since you’ll likely finish the trail in under an hour, I highly recommend hanging out to enjoy the rest of Vogel State Park. You can grab a paddleboat, play a round of mini-golf, or just grill out by the lake.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to see more, you’re not too far away from other North Georgia icons like Preacher’s Rock (for beautiful views of the North GA Mountains) or the double cascades at Helton Creek Falls.
