How to Get to Ramrock Mountain
Ramrock Mountain is located in Dahlonega, right off of highway 60. When using Google Maps, I would type in ‘Woody Gap’ instead of Ramrock Mountain. The GPS often takes you past the parking lot to a random dirt road. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you see a sign reading “Chattahoochee National Forest Woody Gap”, with parking lots on both sides of the road. The trailhead is located off of the south parking lot (not the one with the bathrooms), but you can park on either side.
If you’ve hiked Preacher’s Rock before its at the same location, the trailhead is just on the opposite side of the road. Even though there is a parking lot on either side of the road, be sure to arrive early in the day to secure a spot since the parking fills up fast.
The Trail
Ramrock Mountain is 2.9 miles round trip and is a relatively easy trail. It starts off pretty narrow, then widens slightly as you near the top. If it’s rained recently, the trail can be pretty muddy so keep this in mind when choosing what shoes to wear. I’d suggest wearing hiking boots, even if it isn’t muddy it is pretty rocky so the boots with help protect your ankles and give you better grip.
At ¾ of a mile, the trail begins a slight descend. You’ll begin climbing 150 feet over rocky terrain, just before reaching the top. At this point you’ll start getting glimpses of the view, making you wonder if you’ve made it. Don’t stop yet, you know you’ve reached the top when you see a clearing in the trees. After hanging out here just retrace your steps to head back to your car.
More Hikes in the Area
If you’re in the mood for another short hike there are a few options in the area.
On a hot summer day, headed over to Helton Creek Falls, where you can take a swim at the bottom of the falls. You can also visit Vogel State Park which has several hiking trails, including Trahlyta Falls. Another option would be to visit Desoto Falls, just gives you views of three waterfalls, however you can’t swim in any of these
