Clothes

I know it feels like you’ll be spending all your time at the pool (& you probably will) but you’ll need a few more things other than just swimwear! You should, however, pack light. A few swimsuits, cover ups and dinner outfits and you’re all set! Everything you need should fit in a carry on, meaning you won’t have to wait for your checked bag and can head straight to your resort.

Swimsuits

Depending on how long you are staying, you should pack at least 2-3 swimsuits so you always have a dry one for the next day. It’s nice to have options in case you find one to be uncomfortable to wear for a whole day.

Cover ups

Whether you like traditional cover ups or prefer just shorts and a t-shirt, you’ll need a few pairs to alternate. It might be tempting just to walk down to the pool in your swimsuit, but most restaurants on the resort won’t allow you in without proper clothes.

Dinner Outfits

Check the resort’ ‘s website before heading to the resort to see the dinner restaurants’ dress code. Some places will have a more formal dress code, while others are more casual. Depending on how long you are staying, you can pack one outfit per night or bring a few basic shorts (or skirts) and a few tops to mix and match throughout your stay.

Sunglasses/Hat

Got to keep the sun out of your eyes! If you have bad vision like me, I suggest investing in a pair of prescription sunglasses. I love to read at the beach so it’s so nice to actually be able to see out of my sunglasses. A hat also helps with this and keeps the sun off of your face.

Comfortable sandals

Whatever your go to shoe is for the beach/pool, make sure they are comfortable to walk in. Most resorts are pretty big so you might be surprised how far the walk is from your room to the pool.

Insulated cup

We personally used our cups to keep our water cold but a lot of people will bring an insulated cup for the bartenders to fill up with their cocktail of choice. Just make sure you are staying hydrated because the tropical sun is no joke!

Beach Bag

The good thing is you don’t have to worry about packing and carrying a towel around, but you will need a beach bag to carry your book, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen at the resort is going to be marked up, so be sure to pack enough sunscreen for your trip. Even if you want to “tan” the tropical sun is harsh! Even with reapplying through out the day we still ended up with a little sun burn. If you are only packing a carry on, remember you can’t pack a full size bottle of sunscreen. What we did is pack 2-4 mini bottles and take one or two in our beach bag each day.

Aloe

Hopefully you won’t need it, but it’s best to have some on hand in case you get sunburn.

Waterproof Phone Case

If you’re going to be doing any water activities (snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc) be sure to pack a waterproof phone case to keep your device safe!

Cash

You can check the tipping policy before heading to your resort, however I recommend bringing at least a $100 in ones and fives. While it’s not mandatory at most resorts, it’s always nice to tip your bartenders, wait staff and housekeeping crew.

First Aid Kit/Medicine

It’s best to be prepared. You never know when you’ll need a Band-Aid or pain medicine. Be sure to pack the essentials: Band-Aids, ibuprofen, motion sick medicine (for the plane), ear drops (for water in your ear) , eye drops, etc.

What to Leave at Home

Beach towels

These are provided to you at no extra cost and you can grab a fresh one each day.

Tennis shoes

Unless you plan on doing some hiking or working out while on your vacation- you won’t need tennis shoes.

Shampoo/ Body wash

The resort will provide you with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. I will say that they might not be the same quality as your usual. If you’re someone with naturally drier hair I would suggest bringing your own conditioner as the resort’s conditioner did not cut it for me.
