Gardner Fire Lookout Trail: A Quick Getaway Close to the Bay Area
The east peak summit trail to Gardner Fire Lookout is a short but rewarding hike! Less than 1 hour from the bay area, this trail is perfect for a day adventure. Continue reading for everything you need to know before hitting the trail.
Getting to the Trail Head
Located in Mount Tamalpais state park, the trail is around 45 minutes from the bay area. As you enter the state park and get closer to the trail, the roads will be very windy, so be sure to take your time. The view is very scenic heading to the trail with a few places you can pull off if you’d like to take in the view. There is a large parking lot at the trailhead, so you shouldn’t have any issues finding a parking spot. There is a $8 fee to park here, so be sure to bring cash so you can pay with the self service envelope.
There is a small visitor center, however it wasn’t open when I went. There are plenty of picnic tables to enjoy your lunch at, which is exactly what we did before hitting the trail.
Gardner Fire Lookout- The Trail
Start your adventure to the lookout tower by heading left of the bathroom and up the hill. This trail is a short 0.6-mile round trip, but it’s a steady uphill climb. The trail starts on wooden planks, followed by a series of stone steps. After this navigate a few switchbacks, all while soaking in breathtaking views along the way. The trail is pretty rocky, so take your time to navigate over and around the rocks, pausing to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery.
After the switchbacks, you’ll reach the base of the fire tower. While the tower itself is off-limits, surrounded by cameras and barbed wire, continue around it for sweeping views of the bay and the area. Wander over the rocks to find a side trail leading to another spot for taking in the views. When you’re ready to descend, simply follow the same trail back down.
Verna Dunshee Trail
If you prefer a more leisurely hike, consider exploring the Verna Dunshee loop, a scenic 0.7mile. This trail is ADA accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy the breathtaking views of the bay. Follow the signs to the left of the bathroom to access the Verna Dunshee trail, leading you on a picturesque journey around the mountain, ending near the right picnic area.
Whether you decide to hike the Verna Dunshee trail or the trail to the Gardner Fire Lookout tower, you won’t be disappointed! The views from both of these trails are stunning and aren’t one you want to skip.
